BAckground

Lack of energy through malnutrition and undernutrition has been the prime factor for not attending school. Many children pr.  family leave only a few attending school due to the cost, generally the most able attend.
The local school at Kizi established a school garden with vegetables (cabbage, eggplant, beans,  banana and more). When the youngest children started to get one meal a day at school (sorghum, beans and another vegetable), the number of children who attended school increased markedly. The school principle acknowledges there is still insufficient food to cover their needs.
The school has land available to cultivate more.

Goal

  • To improve the nutritional value of food supplied for the pupils at Kizi school.

Beneficiaries

Nursery school children.

HOW

Planting perennial trees.

Time Line

2024 Moringa trees, 30, sucessfully established. Harvesting of leaves can start. The school and FRED'S FARM have made an agreement that the school will receive a pregnant dairy goat in September. This will in time provide som goat milk for the nursery school children and sensitize both pupils and parents to the value of goat milk.
2023 Moringa seeds planted and followed up by our moringa specialist. 3 macadamia trees planted.
2022 No planting due to continued restricted access to school.
2021 School pupils planted 50 moringa saplings at the school. These died because they weren't tended during lock-down.  Macadamia tree died.
2020 School closed most of the year. Plan made for planting more moringa.
2018 Planted 1 macadamia tree. Jacques followed up the trees.
2017 Planted 1 moringa tree and 1 avocado tree.
