Standard method of cooking in the area is on an open fire, build between 3 stones to put the cooking pot on. Cooking is often done indoors in a room without a chimney. Sometimes it is in a adjacent hut, but then also without any form of ventilation apart from the door. This method is dangerous, with high risk of burn injuries especially with children and very inefficient. So we looked into different options which were simple and built with local materials which could be made, or bought at the local market.
Goal
- To promote a simple cooking stove which is safe, efficient, based on local materials and inexpensive.

Local community
HOW
To test different models of stoves, then promote the best one in the local community.
Time Line
2024 - The original clay stove on the farm had to be moved, so a new was build. This is used by the staff living on the farm.
2022 - We gave TWA families an economic incentive to build their own stoves, but they did not follow the model we suggested. Their stoves were much bigger, with larger wood chambers. NEvertheless these were more energy efficient than their previous stoves. We decided to wait to find another way to implement.
2020 - Tested a wood stove build with locally produced clay bricks. A very simple model with a small chamber. One was built on the farm with help from the TWA. It worked well. The only challenge was to get the outer layer of clay plaster to be robust.
2019 - Continued testing self made solar stoves but experienced it was difficult to get high enough temperature. We concluded that these stoves could work in the dry season with more sun but not the whole year, so we abandoned solar powered stove models.
2018 - Started testing different self made models of solar cooking stoves
