To further develop education on the farm for the young generation, we discussed with the headmaster at Kizi school if an internship programme was feasible. He was positive to the idea and willing to co-operate in both planning and implementation of a pilot project.
Goals
- To increase interest in, and the status of agriculture.
- To give pupils more knowledge about simple methods to improve cultivation.
- To give pupils a means to improve the family income both short and long term.
Beneficiaries
33 pupils and their families.
HOW
To further develop education on the farm for the young generation, an internship programme was started as a pilot in 2021. The headmaster of Kizi school gave vital input to this; age group, criteria for choice of pupils, motivational factors for participation, when the pupils could attend and more.
Three pupils at a time, 16 - 17 year olds, are chosen by the school from vulnerable families. The pupils come after school 2 days pr week, and all day Saturday. They participate in all activities on the farm and have a specific responsibility to establish and follow-up a demonstration plot on FRED'S FARM. Jacques has responsibility for the pupils whilst on the farm. They are encouraged to write a log, and write a report at the end of their internship. In addition to receiving some pay each week, a savings sum is set aside for each pupil. This saved sum is given to the pupil after a successful 12 weeks and is earmarked to start a small farming project at home. The school helps in this process. A diploma is given to all pupils who complete the programme in a satisfactory manner. Jacques and the headmaster evaluate the pupils.
