BAckground

The local school in recent years has started an initiative where there are good hygiene facilities at the school for those who are menstruating, and girls learn how to sew their own sanitary towels. In addition there is an educational programme about sexuality, the menstrual cycle and reproduction.
But in the local community around the farm, menstruation is a practical challenge for those who do not attend school; restricted access to clean water at home and little or no means to make or buy sanitary products. In the work setting on the farm, the ladies use very basic or no sanitary products,  which leaves work in the fields challenging. In addition, there are no waste disposal facilities in rural settings.
Menstrual cups are secure, last for several years and are made of a non toxic material.

Goal

To explore the possibilities of improved sanitary products and practice for the female staff on the farm.

Beneficiaries

Female staff

HOW

Using internal sanitary products can be a concept which is not culturally acceptable in the local community. Through gradual introduction of a product via trusted individuals, we would like to explore the possibility of using menstrual cups. These cups are not available in the local community and they are  too expensive for local ladies to buy. Nevertheless we would like to see if there are alternatives for making it possible to access and purchase menstrual cups.

Time Line

2024 Positive experience. She is willing to be the mentor for 3 staff at the farm.
2023 Agriculturist's wife receives a menstrual cup for trial.
